Cloud Storage Gateways/Controllers
Storage Solutions for a New Era
Whether your organization wants to better manage data in the cloud or across multiple sites, Daystrom can provide a solution that is tailored to your unique data and needs.
Connecting to the Cloud
Regardless of your organization's size and scale, Daystrom engineers can customize a cloud storage gateway that provides better security and simplified access to cloud-based services like AmazonS3, Rackspace/OpenStack, and Google Cloud.
A cloud storage gateway is an appliance, located at a customer location, that translates between standard data center storage protocols (iSCSI, FC, NFS or CIFS) and your cloud-storage service via SOAP or REST protocols. So the gateway acts as a local extension of the cloud.
In addition to translation, a cloud gateway provides:
- backup and recovery
Managing Data Across Multiple Sites
Daystrom can provide a smart, effective solution for protecting data stored across multiple sites.
OLD APPROACH: RAID TECHNOLOGY
Traditionally, standard parity-based RAID technology has been used to store a coherent copy of the data at a single site, and then replicate that data to another site (or sites) in order to protect the data.
NEW APPROACH: INFORMATION DISPERSAL STORAGE
There's a better way. Information dispersal storage (IDS) applies erasure coding (EC) technology (next-gen RAID) to large-scale storage challenges that require multi-site protection. It uses error-correcting codes to transform the data into a chunks or slices that are distributed across all sites. In doing so, the total amount of storage space required for the dataset is reduced, due to the efficiency of erasure coding across the sites rather than within a singular site and replicating.
Daystrom's IDS systems are:
- Self-healing. Should a disk, storage node, or an entire site fail, the built-in error correction codes reconstruct the data from the remaining chunks of data. There are also advantages when replacing failed components, as the rebuilding algorithms of EC are more efficient than traditional RAID.
- Dynamic and efficient. Daystrom's solutions improve efficiencies and data integrity as compared to RAID-based storage systems and can help provide greater flexibility in hardware platforms.
Getting Data Off of the Tree
Traditionally, most file systems have used a "tree" structure, which organizes pieces of data in hierarchical relation to each other.
Object-based storage systems, which form the bases of cloud storage, use object IDs to access and organize data. The advantage of an object-based approach is scale, as the data, metadata, and index can be independent and decentralized. Object-based storage devices operate as modular units that can become components of a larger storage pool and can be aggregated across locations.
The benefits include:
- more direct and concurrent access to the data store
- tremendous scalability
- increased data resilience, which enables disaster recovery strategies
